We promise you a best in class mentorship and training experience and exposure to cutting-edge and complex work.
Finding your niche
When you apply to join us, or during your interview, please let us know which practice group you would like to join.
If you’re not certain of your preferred specialist area at this stage, don’t worry, you won’t be boxed in. In addition to training in your chosen primary practice area, you will also be given exposure in at least one other area. If you have no preference at all, we assess your personality and work with you to identify an area of practice you may be suited to.
And if, after starting in one practice area, you realise that it is not the right kind of work for you, we’ll do our best within the bounds of the Firm’s needs to accommodate a switch.
Our Training Programme
There are three broad aspects to your training at Rajah & Tann:
- With your Supervising Solicitor:
He or she, a highly experienced partner and mentor, will take charge of your training, supervising and guiding you, providing feedback on your performance, and ensuring that you are achieving all your learning objectives.
- With your practice group:
You’ll have the opportunity to work with the other partners and lawyers within the group, who may supervise your work and critique it as part of your training.
- With the firm in general:
With us, you will get a great foundation that will serve you well for the rest of your career. Our practice focused training programme, “Raising the Bar”, has been specially designed to equip you with the insight and practical skills you need to perform effectively in the modern legal profession.
As drivers of legal innovation, we never cease to reinvent ourselves and to prepare you for the transformative change in the legal industry, our RTA Academy is excited to be working with #PeterConnor, CEO and Founder of #AlternativelyLegal to groom you to be client-focused, business ready and tech-savvy lawyers within the RTA network based on his T-shaped Lawyer Framework™.

This collaboration will allow you to be trained in alternative ways of approaching the practice of law and develop non-traditional skills such as process improvement; design thinking; change management; business partnering and project management amongst others to enhance our value and service to our clients.
Care and nurture
Care and nurture
You know it’s going to be hard work and we don’t pretend otherwise, but we do our best to provide a good balance of fun, camaraderie and support.
Everyone in the firm is on first name terms, and we're proud of our most senior lawyers' commitment to taking a personal role in the development of our trainees and associates. You'll find that all our partners are happy to take the time to teach you the finer points of the law and commercial practice - not something that happens in every law firm.
Secondments
We constantly seek opportunities to offer both local and overseas secondments for promising associates who have workedwith us for a reasonable period. We not only want to equip you with the skills you need to achieve your aspirations, but to spur you onto greater heights in your career.
Rewards and benefits
At Rajah & Tann, we expect a great deal from our people, at all levels. In return for their talent and dedication, we ensure that they are appropriately rewarded, both financially and in terms of the generous range of benefits they receive.
Our Training Contract Package
As a trainee with Rajah & Tann, you'll enjoy an attractive package that includes:
- Competitive honorarium
- A sign on bonus for trainees who are retained.
- Reimbursement of various fees after completion of your practice training with us and acceptance to our offer of employment.
It’s NOT All Work and No Play
We believe in working and playing hard and seek to encourage a balanced lifestyle. That is why we were the first major law firm to introduce a flexible dress code. It is also why we were the first firm to have a dedicated in-house café and lounge area, more affectionately known to our lawyers and staff as The Courtyard.
The typical day at Rajah & Tann starts with breakfast served at The Courtyard. Everyone, from the Managing Partner to our newest trainee, can feel at home at The Courtyard, sipping their morning cuppa or tucking into their morning sustenance.
At lunch or in the evenings after work, those of us with energy to spare battle it out on the foosball or ice hockey tables. It's a great way to bond or, simply to blow off some steam after a hard day’s work.
Because we understand the importance of building strong interpersonal relationships, we organise social activities for our trainees and lawyers in informal settings. It is one of our traditions that at such functions, roles are reversed occasionally and trainees become the organisers for some of our annual bashes. Again, we believe that this is a great way for our trainees to feel at home with us and vice versa.
